Salim Salim is currently a senior at Deering High School, and was elected last spring to serve as Deering’s Student Body President for this year. He was born and raised in the city of Mosul in Iraq. His family escaped Iraq in 2008 due to the fears and the security issues. After leaving Iraq, he and his family lived in Turkey as refugees for the UN. At the verge of his adolescence, in 2010, he came to the United States. Throughout his life, he has learned 5 different languages. When he entered high school, one camp changed his entire life for the better and has given him a multitude of opportunities throughout my high school career, and that camp is Seeds of Peace. He is finding success now because of programs and organizations like Seeds of Peace, The Telling Room, and TEDxDirigo, which have helped me maximize my potential as an immigrant living in America.
