David Buchanan Food Diversity Meets the Market Place

  • 2013

David Buchanan’s book “Taste, Memory: Forgotten Foods, Lost Flavors, and Why They Matter” was released nationally by Chelsea Green Publishing in November, 2012, with a foreword by Gary Paul Nabhan. It celebrates the work of plant collectors, preservationists, small-scale farmers, and breeders, with an emphasis on restoring rare and unusual regional foods to our fields and tables.

Taste, Memory describes the trajectory of David’s preservation work since planting his first gardens nearly twenty-five years ago in central Washington State. Today his focus is the development of a heritage food conservation center in Pownal, Maine. In 2013, the first growing season at this site, he planted more than 300 varieties of fruit, herbs, and vegetables. In addition to selling at local farmers markets, Buchanan is collecting rare heritage American apples and building a farm winery to produce hard cider.
